A Gather Round story

The Woman at the Bus Stop

A black suitcase at a rain-dappled bus stop in golden light

Today, she was not waiting for anyone. Her bag sat beside her.

She smiled at every stranger who passed and said only one thing. “Today is a lovely day.”

Her red lipstick suited her. Her clothes sat nicely on her body, and she smelled good, like someone who had taken her time before leaving home.

Her hair was tied back neatly, and a small gold necklace rested on her neck.

I sat beside her. She turned to me and smiled. “Today is a lovely day.”

She looked ahead, still smiling. “I’m setting out to see the world,” she said. “And I’m so excited about it.”

That was when I noticed the black Rimowa suitcase beside her.

I smiled. “I hope you enjoy it thoroughly.”

“I will,” she replied. And I believed her.
